The Medical Manager by Sage: Legacy ID Update

As many of you are aware, May 23, 2008 is an important deadline for all of us. That is the date when healthcare providers will be required to provide only their National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) on all Medicare paper and electronic claims for reimbursement. We expect most carriers to follow Medicare’s lead.

The Medical Manager by Sage: Legacy ID Update

Over the past year, the healthcare industry has been in a transition period, where carriers would accept both the NPI # and the legacy ID on claims. The next step in the NPI process is to remove the legacy IDs from both electronic and paper claims. This step is a major change not only for you, but also the carriers. We expect different carriers will be prepared for this change at different times so it is important for you to communicate with each of your carriers to determine their preparation. We expect most Medicare carriers to be ready by the May 23rd deadline. Sage Software is doing everything in our power to assist you in this transition.

To address the removal of legacy IDs from paper claims, we are provideing you with an NPI Migration Tool (via CD) that will allow you to remove the legacy IDs for paper claims on a per plan basis, as needed. This gives you the flexibility to keep the legacy ID for the plans that still need it and remove it on those that do not.

It is important that you install this utility as soon as you receive it so that you do not experience any unnecessary rejections to your claims. The Legacy ID Update instructions walk you through applying the update and also how to utilize the NPI Migration Tool for those plans that no longer want legacy IDs for paper claims.

For Network Services electronic claims, our clearinghouse (Emdeon Business Services) will handle forwarding only those IDs that are required per payer. No action is required on your part to remove legacy IDs on electronic claims.
